Insurance is really as old as human society. Before there was currency and market economies people relied on one another for insurance against disaster. If one person’s home was damaged by a fire the rest of the community would pitch in and help rebuild it, knowing that the rest of the community would help them in turn. Human societies succeed or fail based upon their willingness to help one another out. Unfortunately, the sheer size of a market economy prohibits this practice.

So with the development of currency, new forms of insurance quickly emerged to echo the changing times. For example, Chinese and Babylonian traders would distribute their wares over many boats so that if one vessel was lost it would not bankrupt them. Even the Stellae of Hammurabi (1750 B.C.,) which recorded Babylonian law, stated that if a trader obtained a loan to insure his shipment, he must also pay a retainer to cancel the loan should the ship be lost or pirated.

The Romans and Greeks had formed ‘benevolent societies’ by 600 A.D. These societies were the precursor to modern health insurance. For a regular fee, members of these guilds could count on money to be paid if they fell ill or died. This, though primitive, is not unlike our modern insurance practices.

Truly modern insurance came to be after the Great London Fire of 1666. This conflagration burnt down some13,000 homes and was a devastating tragedy. Sir Christopher Wren included a site for an ‘Insurance Office’ in his new London city plan in 1667. He remarked that insurance had gone “from a matter of convenience into one of urgency.” In 1681, the ‘Insurance Offices for Houses’ was formed by Nicholas Barbon and eleven other investors.

Today, you can insure just about anything. And the unscrupulous have always taken advantage of the gullible. So it is important when getting insurance quotes, not only to shop around but to research prospective companies very carefully. Sometimes you can also get better deals if you get home insurance and auto insurance policies from the same company. Of course every car owner is required by law to have auto insurance but there are some other concerns to keep in mind when searching for home insurance. Trucking insurance is crucial if you own your own semi truck. As you examine home insurance quotes, make sure you are requesting coverage for potential disasters that could happen locally. For example, if you live in California, fire and earthquake insurance would be a good idea to have. But you probably wouldn’t need tornado insurance. These are just a few introductory points to get you started. But the resources offered by this site don’t stop here. Take a look around.
